I think the main reason for it is a lack of participation. Most people would rather play basketball or football if they're going to play a sport. I say most because I'd rather play soccer personally, but they never got a high school team when I was there. They tried to get a team together 1-2 years ago ('05 I think), but it didn't work out the way they had hoped.

You'd have to have money to pay for a coach and traveling expenses that simply isn't available now. I'm not sure that there is another high-school soccer program in the state at this level. The closest school that has soccer that I know of is El Dorado, and even El Dorado has to play a lot of northwest Arkansas teams.
Soccer just isn't a thing in Arkansas and I can't envision that it ever will be.
Locally, the only way that fielding a team would be possible would be if another sport or two was dropped, and that's never going to happen. Soccer is played in the spring in Arkansas so that means that it's going to cut into either track or baseball. NOBODY in this town is going to give up baseball for soccer, and Crossett is better in track and field than in anything else so dropping it would be crazy.
I'm surprised that CHS has decided to add a golf program this year, since it's going to cut into tennis, at least among the boys.

Track students will run track, the baseball roster is pretty well set prior to spring, you have a lots of kids that can compete, but have no arena.
I have watched a lot of football games where Crossett could have benefited from a soccer player on kick-offs and fields goals. Does coach T think about all the boys and girls clubs member that played soccer that could help him out?
I like to see Crossett kick the ball down the field (like the should) instead of kicking it across the field.
So it really come down to funds and support?

A lot of folks are like me. They'd rather watch paint dry than watch soccer.
Harrison is the only school in our class that I know of that plays soccer.

So it so it really come down to funds and support? Well, yes...in most instances that's the case. There would have to be a substantial amount of interest and commitment to start up a soccer program, plus a larger student body than is here currently. Also--and this is a key factor--you'd have to start up both a boys' AND a girls' program. Federal Title IX requirements demand it. If there wasn't enough interest to start up girls' soccer, the school would have to start girls' gymnastics or swimming or something like that instead. There really isnt' a facility to do either. Without enough interest in a new girls' sport, there couldn't be a new boys' sport either. So actually you'd have to double the amount of money and support before starting the program.

Hey Greeneagle, I'll answer your question about Coach T looking for soccer people or whatever as kickers. When I was 14, I played soccer, and a lot of my team played football. Mark Gray, Case Griever, Jay Livingston (who moved a couple years ago). Jay Livingston was our goalie, and he once drop-kicked the ball from one goal into the other in soccer, he could REALLY kick the ball hard. Harder than anyone else in the soccer league, and he WAS our kicker in football also until he moved. Other than that, the guys like Case and Mark were athletic and everything, and they could kick the ball hard and score goals, but they couldn't really kick it high in the air like Jay could, or like is needed in football. Also, Case was on the kickoff team anyway, so he couldn't have really been the kicker unless it was an emergency, and even then, there were probably better people for the job. Hope that shed at least a little light on that particular question

In reference to the CHS golf team....is this scheduled to be a Fall sport or a Spring sport? I know they moved Tennis to the fall a couple of years ago and this seems to work better than the spring schedule.
In looking back a few years ago (spring 1974) .....I remember when track and tennis were both in the spring. Bob Williams participated in both sports and both district tournaments were the same day. So....he competed in both by running back and forth beween the track and the tennis courts. If memory serves me right, he and Win Purifoy won the district doubles title in tennis and Bob competed in several track events and won the high jump and the the 180 low hurdles.
THose were the days.........5 miles...........in the snow..........barefoot.......up hill.....whatever!!!!!

So Coach Toon is coaching Jr High football, Tennis, and Golf all in the fall??? He's not coaching tennis. Somebody else is going to do that and as of last week, that wasn't nailed down yet. Supposedly it might be the new junior-high boys' basketball coach, a guy named Woodard I believe.

I wish there was more of an interest in soccer in this part of the state. It is a heck of alot safer than football (in a mother's opinion)! I agree with Heath on the point that people around here would not give up baseball for soccer. I don't know if golf will last. There are only a handful of kids playing and they don't seem real thrilled with it. I would be surprised if it sticks around.
My husband is a little nervous that our son is so good in soccer and much more aggressive with it than during baseball season. He thinks its a sissy sport:( We would never give up baseball though.
BTW...there was not even enough interest in the older level soccer to have teams this year for the Boy's and Girl's Club.

Soccer is anything but a sissy sport. It's closer to being full-contact than baseball is. And those guys have to be in great shape to be able to play. No beer-gut players the way that baseball has.
