It's gotten a little boring and stale here recently. So I'm going to try and get something going here. In the last week or so there was a letter to the editor from a former resident upset by the closing of their favorite store. That was the topic at work tonight and it eventually led to a "Do you Remember?" topic. So here's my shot at getting something going in here. Feel free to post and add your own "Do you remember" things.
Do you remember....... 1.Sterlings 2.Gibsons 3.Howards 4.Ray's 5.Shipley Donuts 6.Teibels( Lemon chess pies, mmmmmm) 7.Rose Inn 8.When South Main plaza and Brookshires were woods. 9. Petersburg Trail was gravel. 10. The road to Warren was gravel. 11. The Eagles Nest 12.Herk's 13.The Lion at the zoo. 14.When there was a high dive at the city pool. 15.White's Auto 16.Otasco 17.All Pro sporting goods 18.The original Price School. 19.Calhoun 20.The old Norman Jr. High 21.Dairy Queen 22.The big oak tree in front of Baker's. 23.Trigg's 24.Yarborough Field was Forrest Field 25.The forrestry buildings where the current credit union is.
Feel free to add what you remember and/or comment on some of the things I remember.

Let me try my take on these, based on personal experiences and word-of-mouth:
1.Sterlings. We used to have one of these in downtown El Dorado. Closed in the very early '80s, I'm thinking around '82. Right before they re-opened the streets and abandoned that stupid "open-air mall" concept.
2.Gibsons. Also had one of these in El Dorado. Closed in the late '80s, around '87 or '88 as I recall. We used to go there a lot when I was a kid. Wasn't the Gibson's in Crossett where Larco used to be? In West Crossett?
3.Howards. Also had one of these in El Dorado, closed in the mid '80s, about '84. Also went there a lot as a kid. Another mid-level department store like Gibson's, but Wal-Mart chased it out of town. I can remember tripping my sister's "boyfriend" in the toy aisle there once.
4.Ray's. Never heard of this one.
5.Shipley Donuts. Used to go to one in Hot Springs whever we went up there. Never knew that there was one here. I never cared for it much. Much prefer The Spud-Nut Shoppe.
6.Teibels( Lemon chess pies, mmmmmm) You've got me on this one.
7.Rose Inn. For whatever reason, this seems to be better-entrenched in public memory here than anything else. Centennial Park is basically a Rose Inn cemetery.
8.When South Main plaza and Brookshires were woods. I'm guessing that this was the case up until the early '70s. Wal-Mart had opened there by '74.
9. Petersburg Trail was gravel. It really was a trail at one time, then.
10. The road to Warren was gravel. Ouch!
No clue on 11 through 15.
16.Otasco. Oklahoma Tire and (something--Service?) Co. Used to have one in El Dorado; it later became Western Auto. Wasn't the one here where the cosmetology school is now? The garage doors still are there.
Nothing on 17 through 23.
24.Yarborough Field was Forrest Field. I always thought that it was "Forest" Field, a reference to the forest products industry. Who was it named after?

5.Shipley Donuts. Used to go to one in Hot Springs whever we went up there. Never knew that there was one here. I never cared for it much. Much prefer The Spud-Nut Shoppe. I agree with you there, Heath. There is nothing in the world like a Spudnut. Crossett folks just don't understand the infatuation with spudnuts... lol I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't remember any of the things on the list. I do remember items 1 through 3 on your reply though.

Crossett folks just don't understand the infatuation with spudnuts... lol A handful of them do...I've spoiled a few people here by bringing them back with me when I venture over in the mornings. You remember that time that I tripped that punk kid who my sister called her "boyfriend"? That kid was a brat! And he hit the tiled floor with a splat!!! (I'm just joking...I know that you have no idea what I'm talking about.)

I am going to say that I remember about 5-10% of the things on the list.
There is a Shipley's right down the road from my best friends apartment in LR.
I remember the donut shop that was shut down when the owner ran off with all the money. It was right across the street from AD&N, and I would go there with my dad when we would go up to the depot to visit everyone.

Howard Bros. was in the Larco building.
Ray's Drive-In reloacted to Monticello. The old Ray's Drive-In stood between Entergy and the railroad tracks. 1st Ave wasn't four lane there then.
Tiebel's stood on the site of Ideal Contruction. Best plate lunches in the history of plate lunches.
Herk's was at the corner of 9th and Main where Cingular is located now. I ate there almost everyday during lunch when we could still leave campus.
The first Dairy Queen was actually the Tulip Queen and stood in the curve in North Crossett in front of Glad.

The Eagles Nest was in the original restaurant in what was Country Vittles.
The once was a lion at the zoo. It was in the cage that now has a bear , I think.
White's auto was in what is now the washateria next to Family Dollar.
Yarborough Field is named after Lynn Yarborough. Who I think was a former coach or something.
Tiebles did have excellent plate lunches and is I recall they were generous with the portions.
All Pro Sporting Good s was Robert Freemans first sporting goods store. It was originally in the building where the cable company is now then moved to the corner of 9th and Florida. I think there is church or something it that building now. Anyone remember what was on that lot before the current building was built?
The original Price school sat behind where the abandoned school is on 12th street. It looked much like Hastings. It burned in the spring of 1978. I was a 5th grader there and remember seeing the flames shooting from the building as we played on the playground.
Calhoun sat where First Baptist's Multi-Ministry Building sits. It was an old high ceiling school house with no air!!
I hated to see the old Norman torn down. It was the original high school.
The huge oak in front of Baker's was destroyed during a storm in the late 70's ear;y 80's. It was a mammoth of a tree.
Trigg's was a department store. It was where The Trio was before the fire.
Here's another, who remembers the Country Gentleman and Beaujangles? Pat's?
Going to a movie at the Wren or Sunset?
Eating at the original Catfish Inn.

Yarborough Field is named after Lynn Yarborough. Who I think was a former coach or something. I meant the former name of the field. You spelled it "Forrest" as if it had been named after someone, but I always had been under the impression that it was "Forest" (one "R") and referred to the local forest products industry. Also, wasn't Forest (or Forrest) Field actually where the practice field sits today?

Spelling error after a 12 hour shift. The original field sat where the practice field is but the current one was also called Forest Field.

I've just have to add this.....Herk's was the place to be at lunch during the school year. Of course this was when it was open campus at lunch at Daniels, Norman, and CHS.
The original Price School was actually called Oakhurst Elementary School. The other two elementary schools were Hastings and Calhoun.
I remember the pavilion and picnic area at Hickory Grove in South Crossett. It even had an old hand pump for getting water.
The Maple Street Ball Park had a wooden fence all the way around it, chicken wire to enclose the dugout...and Tex Moore calling balls and strikes.
This will tell my age.....sitting on the front porch of the Rose Inn, spitting sunflower seeds (from Sterlings) on the porch until Catfish Hargroves would come out with a broom and make us sweep up our mess.
Then going across the street to the movie theatre with 50 cents. A quarter to get in the movie, 15 cents for popcorn, and 10 cents for a coke. This was about the time that the Firestone Store was where Kinnard's Jewlers is now, the Safeway store was where First State Bank is now, and Piggly Wiggly was where the Ashley Wellness Center is now.
My mind is now wandering back to CHS and NJHS. Those were the days that 7th graders weren't allowed to smoke cigarettes at school ............unless of course, they went to the "smokers hill", which would have been about where the flagpole at Norman is now.
And these words were said about then...."You mean to tell me Rex Dodson is going to put gas pumps at the Minit Shop grocery store and stay open to 11 o'clock at night. Why would anyone sell gas at a grocery store and who in the world is going to a grocery store that late at night?"....... "You mean we have to pump the gas ourselves?...That'll never work!"
Let's go to the Fifth Light and scare some of those church kids who have driven up from Bastrop.

Crossett sounds like a typical All-American type of town from a bygone era. I'm afraid that those days never will return.

I remember climbing on my bike with my fishing pole and heading over to Lucas Pond. Stopping first at the Minit Shop for a chili dog, bag of funyuns and an Icee. Those were the days.We used to ride our bikes all over town back in those days.
Who remembers when the paper was .15 and every Wednesday there was a group of kids that would go out and sell them.
The biggest event I can remember as a kid was the day they blew up the old smoke stacks at GP. Huge crowd lined the highway and filled the Magic Mart parking lot.

Who remembers when the paper was .15 and every Wednesday there was a group of kids that would go out and sell them. My boss, the publisher of the News Observer, was one of those kids at one time. Somebody else also told me recently that their first job was selling the newspaper here, but for the life of me I cannot remember who.

Who could forget going to lunch at Carter's grocery store? Or jumping out of the trees and swimming on the back side of Lucas Pond, before any of us knew about alligators being in there? Sliding down the spillway? Hanging out at the bowling alley on weekends?

Sliding down the spillway? Hanging out at the bowling alley on weekends? I remember walking home from school and stopping at Carters for an icee and a bag of chips. Forgot about the gators in Lucas pond.
