This will give the teacher a quick reference of who a student and who's not.....is this why we have cameras? Thus all Kids looks the same.... That was the purpose of having students wear name tags and it doesn't work b/c they are constantly forgotten, lost, or destroyed or we have to constantly ask them to put them on. I am an extremely busy parent with work and extracurricular activities. My husband works 70 hours a week and manages to attend college classes and coach my son's baseball team. I guess you have to get your priorities in order. It doesn't just have to be a Mom or Dad that works with your kids on homework...it can be a sibling, aunt, cousin, grandparent, etc. If my kids were having issues with school work or discipline, they would not participate in anything.

Have you guys heard anything about uniforms in the Watson Chapel District? I just caught the tail end of something suggesting that some students have refused to wear uniforms and that the ACLU may get involved.
Could provide a catalyst for burning them out of the CSD this week.

I read something about it on KATV's site a couple weeks ago. Seems the parents are wanting to boycott local businesses in an effort to reduce tax revenue for the schools. The uniforms were implemented district wide not just grade school.

sounds like just something else for people to argue about. kids already get in trouble enough why do we just keep giving them ways to get into more trouble?

what happened was a parent or some parents gave some students the idea of wearing black arm bands protesting the strict policy of the uniforms and about 20 students were expelled for wearing the arm bands.....

So the dress code did not permit students to wear arm bands? That is crazy! Why would they expel students for wearing black arm bands? Obviously their dress code had to state that students were not allowed wear arm bands in order for the students to be expelled for wearing them. Whoooaaaa, banding the wear of arm bands, what's next!

This is what was posted earlier on KATV.
The Watson Chapel School District suspended almost 20 students Friday for wearing black armbands in protest of the strict uniform policy. Parents say it’s no longer a dress code dispute; it is a violation of First Amendment rights.
(Superintendent Danny Knight, Watson Chapel School District) "The constitution guarantees them the right to peacefully assemble and protest that which they're opposed to."
But Superintendent Danny Knight says the students were in violation of a dress code designed to improve safety on school grounds.
(Knight) "If it's a rule, it's a rule. You don't look the other way."
(Knight) "If it was up to the kids none of those kids would have worn them. This thing is being led by two to three people."
People like Amy Tatum who helped organize the black armband protest last weekend. She says it’s not parents pushing the issue it is their kids.
(Amy Tatum, Parent) "It’s taken on a life of its own. It's no longer Mom fighting the battle for her. It's Em standing up for herself."
The ACLU is also stepping in by suing the school district in federal court on the grounds the wristbands were protected as free political speech.
(Knight) "ACLU has to do whatever they have to do and I would say the district is prepared to do what we need to do."

So, I guess you guys know by now that uniforms are out of CSD beginning in the new year. I am glad, but I think it is utterly asinine to take them out mid-year. I buy uniforms for the year in advance and there is no way that my children will wear them now, if they know they don't have too. It is already a fight now to get dressed in the morning. I am relieved though that this topic will be off the table for now. Hmmm....what will be next? ?

Bottom line on the Watson Chapel deal is that it is a power struggle. That much was obvious to me seeing the interview with the Super.

The board finally had enough new blood to reverse the original vote. I think we have a good board right now. I hope to see some good things in the future. By the way Robert Stone was elected as President. A good move I think.
