Latest rumor is that the Main Mall will be torn down and a Walgreens will be built. Anyone else heard this?

It has been circulating in the community for at least a couple of weeks. I'll check on it.
I'd be shocked if it ever happened but it would be a 10,000-time aesthetic improvement for that area.

That is going to be one rediculously expense piece of property to buy, tear down, and rebuild on. I can't see it. The cost of tearing down that building and getting it ready to build a building on are going to be as expensive as building the building almost. You've got the surface structure that you see and a basement structure you don't see. Let alone the fact that there are going to be utility issues with the location of underground utilities right outside the back of the current building that will restrict the size of a new building. I'm not saying it won't happen, but if it does, Walgreens will be paying for that building for a long, long time.

You know that seems to be the way Walgreens does it. They tore the old Coke plant down in Monticello, a convenience store in Monroe on Louisville and another building in Magnolia. Doesn't seem to bother them to tear down and rebuild.

Doesn't seem to bother them to tear down and rebuild. That's true. I guess they figure the most desirable place in town is worth it. They will pay for it for sure.

Also tore down two old fast-food restaurants in El Dorado to build a SMALLER building than what it had already, just to get on a corner lot and out of a deteriorated shopping center.

If my memory is correct Heath I believe you made the same statement about At Woods coming to Crossett I don't remember making that statement. I do remember saying that about Wal-Mart Supercenter. Where's the economic base in Crossett to open a Walgreen's? We've had two other pharmacies to close within the past four years, and the Supercenter has a very well-stocked pharmacy in it. Some people around here seem to think that we're living in a town with 65,000 people in it or something.

It would be good to see some life on Main St. And a Walgreens would bring a more classy look to the area than what we have now (a nice, new building, as opposed to the mall looking like it could cave any second). Also, is there still just an open space where that building was torn down forever ago? If so, something desparately needs to be built there...it makes/made the area look really bad.

The vacant lot is MUCH uglier than the BEAUTIFUL old 3 story Masonic Temple Building that burned so tragically 1 Friday night a few years back right after the annual Christmas in Crossett celebration. Most of us have fond memories of going into the old Bob Elliot Jewelry Store (on the ground floor) just to hear the clocks ticking! Buildings such as that and the old Rose Inn (also now gone) like the old bank building at the corner of 2nd. & Main across from Economic Development Center need to be preserved. Not made fun of.

When it first was built it might have been a nice building, but it was long past its prime.
It has been stated that it would have been better had the entire block been consumed in the blaze, and I'm not the one who said it.

I have an idea for the vacant lot, the Trio building and the Spike Drugstore building. Anyone who has about $1.5 million they are willing to invest, see me and we can make the dream happen.

Back when the Centenniel Committee was meeting, that building was discussed as a possibility for a national historical building. If memory serves me, Launius wasn't interested, and since he owned it, there wasn't anything else that could have been done. I understand that at one time, it had a beautiful ball room on the top floor

It's just like anything else: Without the investment of private money, things won't improve.
A lot of people were in love with the Greenview Cafe, too, apparently, to hear the talk. That block also looks much better now with an empty lot on it.
