Yeah that makes a lot of sense, excellent explanation Heath. Hopefully our crowd will get more into the game this year than they did last year too, even though it's an away game. Actually, the fact that it's an away game probably won't affect how loud our crowd is, because most of the people who really cheer go to every game/most games anyway, including the away games. I can't wait until this game. Do you think there's any chance someone could convince the new principal to let CHS have a pep rally for that game? After going to pep rally's all through high school, there's no doubt in my mind that it gets the players VERY pumped up for the games. From my experiance... the pep rallies that CHS has are not all that peppy...someone needs to figure out some way to get the students more involved. CHS students have no school spirit.

Yeah you're right Emily. It looks like the students think it's 'uncool' (for lack of a better word) to have school spirit. Maybe Mr. Gragg can find a way to change that, and get the students more involved. That would be awesome. You guys that are in the media need to get in contact with him and see what can be done. I think a good crowd could possibly be good for 1-2 more wins in a season, as opposed to a somewhat quiet crowd like we seem to have.

This thread rapidly is changing topics but I'll try to pull it back on task. I've gone on record many times before as saying that the school spirit at CHS is sorely lacking, but spirit always is most evident at football games. Even in Crossett's best year in the last quarter century, in 2003, the home crowds were somewhat sparse and nobody really seemed to be paying much attention until the last regular-seaosn home game. Of course the playoffs were spectacular, but it's a shame that it took 11 games to get it to that level.
The problem? Students. The parents were there trying to cheer but basically the entire student population (minus the band, spirit groups and actual players) spent all night loitering in between the north end of the home-side bleachers and the concession stand.
Anyway...you see a totally different attitude in Hamburg, where students are much more interested and involved. I can't really give you a reason for this, only relay an observation.
And at other schools--well, CHS students really should be ashamed at their lack of support. Go to a place like Harrison or Alma or even less-football-successful towns like White Hall, and see what kind of support those teams have from the student body. Take a look at the Pulaski Academy teams this year and see what its student body does for games.
Here it's is absolutely nothing like where I grew up in El Dorado. I can remember going crazy at games, jumping up and down wearing thermal underwear underneath blue jeans and spilling hot chocolate everywhere, cheering for the team. And I wasn't even a high-school student! I was in like fourth and fifth grade at the time. There were times when it got so loud that you literally could not think. Students here have absolutely NO clue what it can be like, and that's a shame.

do you think it might help if they had a "student section"? I think something needs to be figured out to help these kids get more involved.

It might help, but student sections at other schools are, guess what--begun and maintained by the STUDENTS!
The students have to take the proactive role in this whole thing and stop paying their $5 at the gate just for the privilege of standing around talking about what they're going to go out and drink after the game ends.

I think we definitely need to try to find a way to get the students involved in our athletics, and the members of this website may be the best people to initiate the change. Do you think it would be a good idea to start a thread talking about improving student participation at ball games in the Crossett Spirit Groups or something? It really disappointed me going to the games last year, and feeling like I was the only person cheering..you know? It's not right that all the students at CHS will be leaving high school not knowing what it's like to cheer like that. Heck, maybe we need to buy them all tickets to a Razorback football game, and let them know how good it feels to scream and cheer for your team

The students are the only ppl that cheer throughout the games at U of A....but it sure is fun to be right in the middle of it all.

Em, that's one reason why Little Rock people complain so much about having games moved from there to Fayetteville. They say that the atmosphere is different and give that as the reason why Arkansas has lost just one game in LR since Nutt has been there but a LOT at Razorback Stadium.

Eh, I think that's a part of it, but I think another reason they've only lost one game there is because they only play two per year there...and they usually play 'lesser' teams like ULM or Miss. State.

He really, honestly believes it.

Umm...lol...it's hard to believe that anyone would think that, to tell you the truth, lol. Who is Robert Shields again? I don't know that I've ever heard the name.

Writes the "From the Bench" column that we've been running in the sports section for about four years now. I think he must live on Markham Street. He definitely lives in Little Rock.

Oh okay, that's why I've never heard of him then, lol. I only read the news paper's sports every now and then, since most of it is irrelevant to me, stuff like golf, hockey, baseball...anything but football.

i cant wait to see tate with the ball in his hands this year, he is going to be a monster in the next few years, im going out on a limb here, but i think crossett is going to have a very good team and i'll root them on in every game they play.
