I realize that this is a really broad topic to post on, but I'm trying to incite some discussion here and people generally like to comment on this kind of thing.
Post up 10 of your favorite popular songs and give a reason for each. If you're anything like me, you won't be able to narrow it down to the absolute top 10, but come up with some fairly accurate list of the songs that you like and tell why.
I'm going to hold off on mine until after other people start posting.

Two right off the top of my head are:
Simple Man- Lynyrd Skynyrd--No explanation needed. Best southern rock ballad there is.
Don't Stop Believing-Journey--Steve Perry at his best.

Hey mom you know you are getting old when the music you grew up with is now "classic". Actually when they start appearing on the oldies stations, that's when it's time to throw in the towel.

Don't Stop Believing-Journey--Steve Perry at his best. Eddie knows that he tries to hit those high notes in the shower every morning.

I've got an eclectic musical taste:
•"If You Could Read My Mind," Gordon Lightfoot. Among the most beautiful ballads ever written, performed, or recorded. •"More Than a Woman," Bee Gees. People would have much better feelings about the disco era if all of the songs had been this good. •"We're in This Love Together," Al Jarreau. Just makes you feel good. •"Last Christmas," Wham! Arranged perfectly, and is exactly what a pop record should be. •"Look What You've Done to Me," Boz Skaggs. He has a such a unique and distinctive vocal style...and love the piano intro, really says something. •"It Might Be You," Stephen Bishop. Might be the greatest pop love song ever. •"Rise," Herb Alpert. Most people probably had thought that Alpert's best days were over by the time that this song came out, but it's the best he ever did. •"Fool (If You Think It's Over)," Chris Rea. Just love how smooth the music and vocals are...almost sounds half-asleep. •"Suddenly," Olivia Newton-John and Cliff Richards. One of the best pop duets ever recorded. •"Lyin' Eyes," The Eagles. I think most objective people would place this among the best pop songs ever recorded.

Don't Stop Believing-Journey--Steve Perry at his best. Eddie knows that he tries to hit those high notes in the shower every morning. On a good voice day I can nail those high notes! I sang tenor in the Easter musical this year. When my voice is in shape, I can get up there.

In no particular order: Freebird, Lynyrd Skynyrd--Southern Rock Anthem. Black Hearted Woman, Allman Brothers–Showcases the non-slide guitar work of Duane Allman. Runnin' Down A Dream, Tom Petty–Best driving song ever. "Me and Del were singin', Little Runaway." Hotel California, Eagles–Maybe the best ever. I'll Play the Blues for You, Albert King–Maybe one of the best five blues songs ever. Boogie Chillen, John Lee Hooker–Another of the best five blues songs. Big influence on rock. Layla, Derek and the Dominoes--Unrequieted love deep in the throes of heroin addiciton. Powerful music. Sympathy for the Devil, Stones--Mick and Co. kick butt song. Kashmir, Led Zeppelin--It's why "Zed" was one of the best. Starry Night, Don McLean--Because I like it, that's why.

"More Than a Feeling" is the only Boston song that I like, but it's a good one (speaking of high notes).

I forget it's "Vincent." Must have been thinking about the painting. I've got two Boston albums from the 70s. For some reason, they've dropped out of favor with me. Don't listen to their music much anymore.

Whoa, I feel kinda bad about the music I listen to after reading the songs you guys listed, lol. I'm more of a hard rock fan, with some hip-hop in there also. I don't think I'd be able to list 10 songs. I like Nickelback, Godsmack, T.I., Matchbox 20, stuff of that nature.

I actually kind of like Matchbox 20. Unless the sound has changed since five years ago, I wouldn't really classify that as "hard."
I like some of the "pure" rock from the late '70s and early '80s--Journey, some Boston, Toto, REO Speedwagon, even a little Van Halen and ZZ Top. Mostly I'm much more into soul, though. Very few people know this about me, but I'm actually black.

Yeah, I think their sound is still pretty much the same as it always has been. Then again, when I said I listen to Matchbox 20, I was actually refering to some songs that are...not new, lol. The ones on the cd that 'Unwell' is on, I think it's from a couple years ago.
