For those of you who complained about a lack of baseball coverage in the newspaper back during the summer (and you know who you are), we're about to run into similar difficulty with basketball.
In the past we had three teams--Fountain Hill, Crossett and Hamburg, plus the junior highs--and each week at least one of those teams was playing at home, or within reasonable driving distance. Fountain Hill since has gone away and there now is only Crossett and Hamburg, as with football.
Except with football, the games are all played on Friday nights (or Thursdays for junior high). Basketball is a little different, but for the most part the high school teams play twice a week once conference play begins. Crossett always has played on Tuesdays and Fridays. The Tuesday games are an impossibility for us because of deadlines, so on weeks when the home game was that night, I still could cover Hamburg games.
HHS always used to play on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays--mostly Mondays and Fridays. For whatever reason the Lions have moved over to playing Tuesdays and Fridays too, and nearly every home game is on a Tuesday while the road games will be on Fridays.
That's going to put me into a pickle because Crossett also plays a lot of Friday road games.
In the regular schedule right now I see about four dates--possibly as many as six counting tournament ball and decent road trips--when I can cover Crossett games. That has been pretty typical in the last five or six years. But for Hamburg there are only two dates on the entire schedule, other than a Christmas holiday tournament, that I know that I'll be able to get to.
Normally I can get to three or four Hamburg games before Christmas even gets here, but now I won't be able to cover a single one this semester. The two that I will be able to make are both in January and a week apart.
When you're on a weekly deadline as we are, and have such a small staff, these things happen and there's nothing at all that we can do about it.
