Here are some photos of Jeremy Evans as a freshman Western Kentucky Hilltopper that I ran across yesterday. These are from the WKU version of Midnight Madness, which they called Hilltopper Hysteria. It was held on Friday night.
These things last only 10 minutes and I think that the Hilltopper fans in attendance were disappointed. From what I can gather they get built up before every single season, thinking that they've got something really great. The same thing has happened this year since they have several new recruits (Jeremy included). When the recruits didn't just blow them away in a 10-minute scrimmage (and a a brief slam-dunk contest), they are beginning to grow uncomfortable.
I've been following him the whole way and Jeremy kind of came out of nowhere to Hilltopper fans. None of them even had heard of them until I made contact with them. So they were very surprised when he signed. The early reports of his unscripted workouts were overwhelmingly positive--probably too positive. Granted, not a single game has been played yet and in fact they just started structured practices on Friday, so anything is possible, but it's always been my opinion that Jeremy is going to have to come along slowly. A few of the folks in Bowling Green had themselves convinced that he was going to set the world on fire and be a freshman All-American or something.
That whole caveat might not be necessary here but I thought I'd inform you guys of what he's up to and how things are going. In the "Hysteria" scrimmage Jeremy mostly played center, which probably comes as a great surprise to anyone who ever saw him in high school. But Western Kentucky plays an up-tempo offensive style and relies a lot on transition basketball as I understand it--similar to Nolan Richardson's philosophy--so the five spot at WKU isn't the standard five as most of us think of it. But several people talked about how he got "muscled around" in the paint on Friday night. He did score at least once and he did block at least one shot.
He didn't do especially well in the dunking "contest" (that's what it's been labeled but I'm not sure that there was a winner), but apparently the whole team was a disappointment and missed a lot of dunks. This simple and seemingly-unimportant thing is why a number of the WKU fans kind of have their heads hanging a little, not about Jeremy, but about their whole season. Uninformed fans are silly about stuff like that.
I'm going to provide only the links here and let you pull them up on your own if you want to. Nothign is more annoying to me than having to wait while an entire page full of photos loads so I think this is the better way of presenting these.
You can tell right away (anyone who watched Evans play in high school) that our boy has put on a little weight and muscle mass. Oh, and he's still wearing No. 40.
