I have watched this site for a few months and I am quite disturbed that there is no sense of outrage and concern over the handling of the school system. There seems to be no sense of leadership at all by anyone. There just seems to be a "bury our heads, and maybe it will go away" thought process about problems.
The best hires made in recent years was has been Mr. Hill, who has a proven track record as an admnistrator. Mr. Gragg, who seems to be doing a good job. Mr. Hancock, who appears to have gottten the attention of many of the students at CHS. Mr. Lucas, who seems to be doing well. And Mr. Kelly, who is in a very difficult job dealing with a very difficult age group.
I cannot say the same for some of the other hires prior to this year.

Well, speaking as someone who has been made the sacrificial scapegoat for everything bad that has happened in the district over the last three years (a classic case of shooting the messenger), I'm actually going to have to note something "POSITIVE" (buzz word of the century) about the CSD here.
You mentioned several hires, all of which were made this year. To me that's a credit first of all to the revamped school board and second of all to the administration for making the recommendations. Those hires tell me that the district is turning things around.
It's a big turn to make. Make no mistake about that. And the district is only about halfway through the turn right now. It's regrettable that it has taken so long...certainly I agree with you there. Denial was a huge part of that. There's still much work to be done, but it is heading in the right direction.

horseman wants outrage at the administration for the direction we're going, and for burying their head in the sand, and then mentions 4 top level hirings as being good moves. You also might notice what our facilities are starting to look like too. When administrators are willing to call in independent consultants to look at the job they are doing, it shows me that they are far from being sandy headed. I'm sure the board would love to hear your ideas on how to handle problems that most of the school systems in this area have. What do you do when so many kids come to school with no home training at all. Some kids are just sent to school with the idea of "ya'll handle 'im, lord knows I can't". Alot of kids these days are being raise by Grandma, while others don't even have that help. Problems like this are going to be around for a long time down the road, but I can tell you that your administrators are paying attention, and are doing everything that they feel will work. But, once again, I'm sure they would love to hear from anyone who has access to the magic pill that will fix these very complex problems. One thing that this administration is doing constantly is "working toward getting better". Jump in there and help. I'm sure they will appreciate it. Coach a boys and girls club team. Help out with a big brother program. Help guide the kids when they're away from school, and you may see a better school system. Just my humble opinion.

Does this maybe have anything to do with a petition of over 50 signatures delivered today asking for a special board meeting Thursday night?

Why are they doing this? The board already made the decision to take the uniforms out at semester. I could not be happier, if anyone asked the actual uniform wearers they would find out the little kids are overjoyed with this decision. I think that everyone should just accept the board's decision and move along.

I think they want the special meeting because of the change in policy in the middle of the year concerning uniforms . It was recommended that they change the policy for the next school year which is only fair to parents who have already bought uniforms for the year. Every parent can't just go out and buy more clothes. They just bought new uniforms. Now if you want to see kids picked on about clothing wait and see all of the children whose parents can't afford to buy more clothing show up after Christmas in uniforms.

Reopened the uniform issue and promised to vote on it again.
What's the point of that? I don't know.
Full story in tomorrow's News Observer.

I don't think they'll vote to change what they did in October. They may vote to reaffirm their decision, but not to change it. Probably be 4-1.

I hope you are right. Robert Cornelius has to wear a uniform at his work and from what I understand, he didn't like being told he had to wear them, so he should understand that not all the kids want to wear them. My child was happy to hear they would be out as of Jan 1 because he has clothes he has outgrown since they can't be worn to school. Maybe they will focus more on the education of the kids and not the uniforms they wear. If some of the people who want the uniforms back in the school who don't have kids or grandkids involved cared more about the test scores and education, things would be different. If my child wasn't in the school system, then I wouldn't care what everyone else's child wore because I wouldn't have a dog in the fight.

I don't have a dog in the fight but I still care. It's the principle of the matter.
