I saw this Saturday at the LTU/ U of A game.
The batter from Arkansas hit a dribbler to the pitcher....then just backed away from plate and just stood there claiming the ball bounced off the plate (therefore a foul ball). The coach from Arkansas came out saying it should have been called a foul ball.
My initial thought was.....the batter should have been running to first as fast as he could since he didn't hear "FOUL BALL". Then I got to thinking.....maybe since it was a dribbler to the pitcher for an easy out......he was coached to stand there and let the coach claim the "hit the plate...foul ball" to umpire....figuring the odds would be better in convincing the umpire of such ..than the pitcher making an errant throw. Any thoughts from a coaching standpoint?

This WAC officiating crew must have gone to the Larry Cantley Umpire Training School. ;D

Entire plate is completely in fair territory! As are the FOUL LINES! Fair Ball (from your description) runner needs to RUN to 1st. Now I know a college coach knows this therefore he would only be arguing to protect his UN-knowledgeable player. Remember even if the ball 1st. landed or touched in foul territory and then rolled fair, if it was not touched while on/in/over foul territory you have a FAIR ball. Unless of course it rolls into fair territory after going past either 1st. or 3rd. base foul.

If I bit you, I'd need a tetanus shot.
I'm not sure if the complaint was that the ball hit the plate or hit his foot. It was a weird play all around. Hitting a foot would make it a foul, wouldn't it?

Hitting a foot would make it a foul, wouldn't it? Correct! That is a foul ball. What if hits in the batters box first?
