Ive got a couple of messages from people asking me about my well being from last Saturdays Tornado. Let me first say that me and my wife are both fine and only by the grace of God our home was untouched. For those of you who know a little of the layout of Dumas, I live maybe 500 yds from The Dumas Lions Baseball fields at memorial park on South Main St. The tornado crossed at the ball fields. Unless there is a miracle there will be no summer baseball at Dumas this yr. The High School baseball field was damaged, but not destroyed. The summer fields were not as lucky. We lost 30% of our businesses, 1/3 of our factories, and have 800 people out of jobs. If you hear anyone say we did not having warning, do not believe it. We had TV warnings, radios, and tornado sirens, these things in my opinon helped save lives. I am an off duty paramedic, and was called in to help, but had no idea what i was getting into when i pulled up into the center of town. I was met with 4 pts and my driver was my wife...that was scary enough in itself. I stayed on the ambulance until about 11pm Saturday night and was back in town at 7am Sunday morning helping people save anything they could. Homes and jobs are replaceable, lives are not and only by God's grace are we able to say that we are fatality free. I appreciate the concern! Dumas has a long long way to go...but we will make.

We are all thankful that that there were no fatalities. Watching news Saturday evening and seeing the devastation brought alot of sadness. My kids and I became very familiar with Dumas over the last 12 years. We have shopped the Mad Butcher and the old Wal Mart. We've eaten at the McDonald's and Butches. Almost like home. We have played ball at the ball fields. My youngest spotted a young fellow on the Sunday news cleaning up at a flower shop. He recognized him from baseball. Our prayers continue to be with the people of Dumas. A young man at our church worked Katrina and said the damage was just as bad as what he saw in Louisiana and Mississippi.

Sorry I put that in the wrong place Outlaw. Yeah, I talked to a guy from Fox news Sunday and he said it reminded him of New Orleans, except for it being 10 times bigger down there. I had lots of friends who lost homes, but when I saw the ballfield I broke down. Ive had so many memories down there. Ive sent requests out to people in regards to getting help rebuilding the fields for the kids. Dont laugh but I even emailed Oprah.

I'm on the local Babe Ruth Board here and I'm going to see if there might be something we can do to help the kids get their fields back. If I recall, one of those fields was just built in the last year or so. I know there are much greater worries than a ball field but those kids are going to need those fields. Sports is good therapy and will help the kids get their lives back to normal. We have met a lot of good people the last few years playing baseball against you guys.

I know the Dumas Lions Club and especially those kids would appriecate any help Outlaw. I know I was talking to a group of them Sunday and it was really weighing on thier minds. One of the young men lived in the area where everything was destroyed, but was still heart broke over the fields. The new field you talked about is completely gone..there is nothing left of that field. The concession stand is destroyed, the dugouts on the small baseball fields are demolished. lights are down. the park at the end of the fields where Dumas has its annual festival is no longer a park...and park of the legion building is down. I sent an email to Babe Ruth headquarters yesterday. Not sure if it will help, but who knows. Ray Shephard is the president of the baseball program in Dumas if you need to talk to someone or I can get messages to him. 3 days later...this still doesnt seem real. The high School girls softball team use these fields also, so i dont even know what they are gonna do...i guess be the road Kats!

I think it's an outrage that FEMA isn't stepping in to help the people of Dumas. I have family there and thankfully, none of their homes were destroyed but one uncle had 2 businesses totally wiped out. They were located directly across from the Fred's and Mad Butcher.
We have over 8000 FEMA trailors taking up space in Hope and they can't send 100 of them to Dumas? They have been wasting away there ever since Katrina. I wish Pryor and Lincoln good luck when they go before Congress on the 15th concerning this matter. The people of Dumas need all the help they can get if they ever hope to recover from this.

I was there for both of them in Hamburg in the 80's. One on a Sunday and the other on the following Wednesday. I watched one in the distant while playing a 7th grade fooball game in Warren. I won't even guess how long ago that was. I hope I never see another. Hogdog must not have stuck around for the second one or missed the first one and wanted to see the other one.
