Press release 3/23/06
The City of Crossett Parks and Recreation (Athletics) Department in conjunction with Crossett Babe Ruth Baseball and the Crossett Chamber of Commerce held a brief luncheon Thursday March 23, 2006 in the Board Room at the Chamber office. In attendance was Steven Tellefsen President/CEO of Babe Ruth League Inc. from Trenton NJ., and Vice President of Marketing and Operations Joe Smiegocki. Smiegocki and Tellefsen were in the area to conduct a workshop in Monticello Arkansas for the 16 Year Old Babe Ruth World Series commencing on August 11th. through 19th, 2006. Tellefsen and Smiegocki were traveling with Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth Southwest Regional Commissioner James Wagoner and City of Van Buren Parks and Recreation Director “Big” Al Swain (Swain manages the Field of Dreams Complex on I-40) and was the Host President of the 2004 13 Year Old Babe Ruth World Series and will serve in that capacity again in 2008 when Van Buren will host the 15 Year Old Babe Ruth World Series.
The main purpose of the visit was for the contract signing allowing Crossett to Host the 10 Year Old Cal Ripken Southwest Regional Tournament here in Crossett at the Sports Complex. Teams will arrive in Crossett from North Arkansas, Mississippi, Texas (3), Oklahoma, South Arkansas and possible New Mexico and the Virgin Islands. Crossett’s 10 Year Old All-Star team will be the Host team for this event and will not be required to participate in District and State Tournament play prior to the regional. They may have an option to voluntarily play in both. The festivities will begin with the Tournament of Champions Banquet on Thursday July 20th; the 1st. game of the Tournament will be played at approximately 11:am July 21st. Opening ceremonies will most likely take place before the 4th. game of the day when Crossett will play its 1st. game as host team. The Tournament will last through July 26th. and should have significant economic impact on this area.
Tellefsen, Smiegocki, Wagoner and Swain all toured the new Sports Complex prior to the brunch at the Chamber and were genuinely pleased with the plans to add larger bleachers and shade cover in stages for the next three years. That and the addition of larger press box facilities will go a long in Crossett’s ability to secure a future World Series Tournament to Crossett, hopefully by 2010. Acting on behalf of Mayor Scott McCormick, City Councilman Robert Freeman presented Steven Tellefsen with a letter requesting that Crossett host the 10 Year Old Cal Ripken World Series in 2010.
A large selection of the local committee chairs for the different committees needed to present a regional tournament were also in attendance at the brunch in addition to Parks and Recreation Commission Chairperson Anita Foster and Crossett Babe Ruth League President James Ed Woods, and State Representative Johnny Bolin.
