The Eagles are 14-10 and 9-4 right now. Monticello is the team that they're competing with for that No. 2 spot.
It's still unclear at this point which team will finish second and which third in the East, the conference that the Southeast is paired with for the first round of the state tournament, so there's really no way to say if second or third would be a better draw. My personal feeling is that the Eagles don't want to have to face Marion. Marion could be second or third but if the season ended today, would be third.
The most recent conference standings I've seen for Monticello had the Billies at 7-3 with Central, Mills, White Hall and North Pulaski to do. They'll beat NP without a problem and will lose to Mills. The other two are toss-ups.
Provided that Crossett takes care of Stuttgart on Friday, the Eagles will be 10-4. With no upsets, Monticello also will end up at 10-4. The two split head-to-head so you have to go to a point system to determine who gets the spot. In basketball you factor up all of the victory-margin points, up to a maximum of 10, for each conference game. I've got no idea what kind of points that Monticello has accumulated, but in rough estimation, Crossett has 82 to 85 right now, spread over nine victories.
If a team still cannot be decided based on points, then there's a coin flip.
I guess the bottom line though is that you can't gripe about what draw you get in the state tournament, because if you expect somebody to call you a good team, you're going to have to beat other good teams. The Eagles have been going through their typical mid-late season slide throughout February that I fully had expected. They've got to bounce back with not just a workable, but a dominant performance against Stuttgart if they're going to convince me that they have a chance at advancing in the state tournament.
